Ecover Dishwasher Tablets are the eco-friendly choice that doesn’t compromise too much. The formula is plant-based, the wrapper is fully water-soluble, the tablets are safe for septic tanks, and for everyday loads, the cleaning is genuinely competitive with Finish Powerball.

The cost per tab (12.1p; 10.9p on Subscribe & Save) sits noticeably above the budget brands and slightly below the Finish flagship. The pricing makes sense once you understand what you’re paying for: the formula skips phosphates, chlorine bleach, and synthetic fragrances. For most household routines that doesn’t matter. But for households on septic-tank drainage in rural Britain, the alternative damages the septic biome over months.

Performance on everyday loads is solid. Plates, glasses, cutlery, lightly-greasy pots, all clean. Where Ecover lags the conventional tabs is on baked-on grease and the very worst hard-water mineral spots. You’d notice the difference if you put a roasting tray with cremated cheese-and-gravy edges through a cycle: Finish Quantum handles it; Ecover doesn’t.

The 70-tab pack is smaller than competitors, which keeps the absolute price approachable but works out higher per tab than the bulk Finish packs. Subscribe & Save offers about a 10% discount; worth setting up if you’ve committed to the brand.

Method Smarty Tabs are the obvious like-for-like alternative on paper, but they have dropped off the major Amazon UK listings and we have not been able to track a stable price for them. If that changes, this guide will be updated.

Buy this if: you’re on a septic tank, you specifically want to minimise synthetic-chemical use, or you’re running everyday loads without heavy grease.

Skip this if: you have hard water and need limescale-shifting performance (Fairy Platinum Plus), or you regularly put heavily-soiled cookware through the machine without pre-rinsing (Finish Quantum).
