Full review

Fairy Platinum Plus is the UK dishwasher tab to buy if you have hard water. That’s the entire pitch, and the reason it’s worth its premium over Finish Powerball Max despite costing a couple of pence more per tab.

Hard water leaves calcium and magnesium deposits on glass. Visible as a white film or cloudiness, especially on previously-clear pint glasses and wine glasses. The chemistry that shifts these deposits in a dishwasher is different from the chemistry that breaks down food residue. Fairy Platinum Plus has the calcium-handling additives that the cheaper Finish and Sun tabs skimp on.

If you’re anywhere in southern or eastern England (London, Cambridge, the south coast, East Anglia) and you’ve been finding cloudy glasses with Finish or Sun tabs, switching to Fairy Platinum Plus is the diagnosis and the fix. The film clears over 2–3 cycles. Glasses go back to clear.

At 20p per tab (19p on Subscribe & Save), it’s premium pricing. The Subscribe & Save discount is unusually modest at 5%, Fairy clearly knows their target customer doesn’t price-shop. Worth setting up regardless if you’ve committed to the brand.

Cleaning performance beyond limescale handling is excellent: the formula handles grease, baked-on residue, and tea staining roughly on par with Finish Quantum. The difference between Fairy and Quantum comes down to which problem you’re optimising for, Fairy for hard water, Quantum for skipping pre-rinse.

For households without hard water, Fairy Platinum Plus is over-engineered. The £20 per 100 tabs vs Finish Powerball Max’s £15 per 110 doesn’t justify itself unless the calcium-handling matters.

Buy this if: you have hard water (white film on glasses is the giveaway), and you’re tired of seeing it.

Skip this if: you have soft water, Finish Powerball Max gives you the same cleaning power for less.
